TASMANIA STATE VISION

  • Strength in Boundaries

ADVOCATE FOR THE CREATION AND MAINTENANCE OF HEALTHY BOUNDARIES FOR STUDENT LEADERS

In positions of student leadership individuals may often find that their life becomes an act of balancing personal expectations, study expectations, work expectations, and leadership expectations. In managing these expectations it is important to be aware of how much of our space we give to others and not giving away too much of ourselves.

NAAUC advocates for leaders as representatives of their communities, but in order to serve our communities we must first look after ourselves as leaders. By providing support to student leaders at a local level and opportunities for education, NAAUC can support student leaders in finding a balance and saving enough space for individuals to look after themselves and their communities.

  • Intercollegiate Growth

LAYING A FOUNDATION FOR STRONG INTER-COLLEGE COLLABORATION

In 2024 NAAUC is helping the colleges in Tasmania’s south build an Inter-College Committee to provide structure for combined events and a framework removed from any one individual college to allow for positive and unbiased communication. The construction of this committee comes as a solution to historic hostility between colleges and a first step towards building positive bonds which will create a new Inter-College legacy of true collegiality.

Focussing on pillars aligned with NAAUC’s core values of Community, Growth, and Leadership the committee aims to create a community of leaders able to support individuals and colleges in their growth.

  • Opportunity & Access to Leadership Training

PROVIDING STUDENT LEADERS WITH TRANSFERABLE SKILLS AND RESOURCES

NAAUC seeks to provide residents and student leaders of residential communities with leadership training to support the growth of individuals and their communities. Though this training is targeted towards leading residential communities the skills learned are transferable to the individuals personal and professional spheres. Supporting students in becoming progressive professionals with a broad toolkit of skills to draw on throughout careers.

National Conference 2024

25th November - 1st December

The University of Sydney & Macquarie University

NAAUC National Conference creates a space where students from across Australia come together to discuss their residential experience and share their ideas about how it may be improved. With a range of academic seminars, workshops, panel discussions and keynote speakers, the conference empowers delegates, spur passion for leadership, and engage the diverse perspectives of students from residential communities across Australia.

The conference also provides unique social activities each day to allow delegates the opportunity to mingle, relax, network with their peers, and even get new ideas for events at their college.

Tasmania NAAUC History

Although it is a small state, Tasmania has always been clearly represented in the National Association of Colleges.

The three traditional colleges at the University of Tasmania, John Fisher College, Christ College, and Jane Franklin Hall, have all been involved with NAAUC since its inception more than fifty years ago. Each of the Colleges have sent representatives to the National Conference, and even had students join the team, all within the past five years!

Currently, Tasmanian Colleges have two of their current or former residents on the NAAUC Team, Tasmanian College NAAUC Alumni also play an outsized role in supporting the team.

NAAUC is extremely proud of its connection to Tasmania. In 2022 NAAUC held a state summit which was a large success. Being a small state, it's been some time since NAAUC has held a National conference in Tasmania, the last one being in 1995 at Christ College, shortly preceded by Jane Franklin Hall in 1990.

NAAUC is excited to continue working in Tasmania, and is excited to continue its strong relationship with Tasmanian Colleges in 2024.
