QUEENSLAND STATE VISION

  • Together Toward Change

NAAUC ENCOURAGES ALL COLLEGES TO WORK COLLABORATIVELY TOWARD ACTIONING CHANGE IN THEIR COMMUNITIES.

NAAUC believes that before anything else, colleges are communities, and within certain regions these communities extend beyond the walls of your residence. The community you foster within your college informs your relationships with neighbouring communities, and in turn the general public.

NAAUC believes that the strongest communities are diverse communities, bringing together individuals from a variety of backgrounds with different lived experiences. Deep and meaningful connections between students across University Colleges helps to build awareness and further the development of residences as safe, shared spaces.

NAAUC encourages a cohesive and collective approach to change in University Colleges, through forming connections between residences both in your region and across the nation. Social capital is abundant in residential communities, and exists to be utilised by student leaders when approaching action toward the evolution of college culture in Australia.

  • Challenging Historical Bias and Competition

NAAUC IS CALLING ON UNIVERSITY COLLEGES TO ACTIVELY ADDRESS AND CHALLENGE EXISTING BIAS AND UNHEALTHY COMPETITION BETWEEN AND ACROSS NEIGHBOURING RESIDENCES.

NAAUC acknowledges the value that history and tradition holds within University Colleges across Australia, and encourages the maintenance of these pillars of student experience in line with shared values and cultural evolution.

NAAUC asks colleges to address the cultural, social, and safety risks associated with unhealthy intercollege competition and bias, and encourages communities across Australia to participate in productive conversations between residences.

Students deserve to feel safe and supported within both their college and the extended inter-college community. By challenging existing bias, stereotypes, and unhealthy competition, students living at University Colleges can experience and be supported by a community wider than their own.

The elimination of historical bias and the encouragement of healthy competition has the potential to foster an inter-college community across Australia that is greater than the sum of its parts.

  • Support for Student Leaders

NAAUC WISHES TO PROVIDE A STRONG NETWORK OF SUPPORT FOR STUDENT LEADERS LIVING IN UNIVERSITY COLLEGES.

NAAUC understands the unique challenges involved in leadership at college. The association provides not only direct support to student leadership teams through programs and offerings, but further through extending the network of support for individuals to colleges and students across the nation.

NAAUC acknowledges further that students without positions can serve through leadership by example, and appreciates the value that these individuals hold. Our offerings and programs extend past those with formal roles, and are aimed at enhancing both formal and informal leadership for the betterment of college and residential-living communities.

Further, NAAUC envisions our role in supporting student leaders to go beyond the formal setting. Through regular contact and engagement with college leaders, we aim to form meaningful connections with the communities we serve, and truly appreciate the value that these relationships hold when supporting leaders in their various roles.

Leadership in colleges is unlike any other experience, and our team is dedicated to ensuring that individuals in such roles are equipped with the correct tools, and backed by strong support, to create a culture they are proud of within their communities.

National Conference 2024

25th November - 1st December

The University of Sydney & Macquarie University

NAAUC National Conference creates a space where students from across Australia come together to discuss their residential experience and share their ideas about how it may be improved. With a range of academic seminars, workshops, panel discussions and keynote speakers, the conference empowers delegates, spur passion for leadership, and engage the diverse perspectives of students from residential communities across Australia.

The conference also provides unique social activities each day to allow delegates the opportunity to mingle, relax, network with their peers, and even get new ideas for events at their college.

Queensland NAAUC History

Queensland has always been one of NAAUC’s most engaged states, and formed a large part of the Association's membership over the past 10 years. In Southern Queensland, the St Lucia colleges have always played a large role in the National College community, and in northern Queensland, Colleges at Townsville and James Cook University have played an outsized role in the Association for many years.

Over the past 10 years, NAAUC has held five National Conferences and Two Regional Conferences in Queensland, all of which have been outstanding successes. This speaks to the level of passion and commitment Queensland Colleges have for representing themselves on the national stage. Most recently, NAAUC held its 2022 National Conference at St John’s College UQ.

Each of the UQ St Lucia Colleges, as well as residences at the Gatton Campus, Toowoomba, and at Griffith University have all been involved with NAAUC in recent years, attending conferences, state summits, booking NAAUC On The Roads, and buying in as NAAUC members.

Further to the membership of Queensland Colleges, students from queensland have formed a large part of NAAUC’s Executive Committee and wider management team. Currently, five of NAAUC’s team members are from UQ Colleges, and in 2021, The President of NAAUC hailed from the Women’s College UQ.

NAAUC will always treasure its connection to Colleges in Queensland, and we look forward to the continuing partnership in the future.
